Thesis resume

PRAISE OF INHABITED SPACE The gap: paradigm of the artistic creation Speeding up, urbanization, foreclosure of what can be perceived... The unsustainability of globalization prompts us today to overhaul the folds of thought that have ended up in the deterioration of relationships we have with the natural environment and the living things. The assessment of an ever more technical, smooth and silent world highlights the need of a paradigm shift. The binocular vision thanks to which we see at the course of reality seems to have faded our ways of thinking, representing and first and foremost inhabiting. Consequently, binocular vision, perception and attention overcome by virtualization see their field of action goes down. Aware that the skein of the world is to be solved rather than unravelled, my artistic practice just like my artistic research explores the biases, the passages, the inappreciable transitions allowing to open again spaces and perspectives that are literally vital to the future. This doctoral thesis argues that what lies in between, irrespective of its nature, scale or type (mid-places/"mi-lieu", relationships, small lair) forms a pharmaceutical and aesthetically response against the world foreclosing against itself. By beeing pharmaceutical, these mid-places are a driving force behind the real life transformation. A and Non A at the very same time, neither A nor Non A at the very time, the gap is this third place where the course is updated. It's the narrow scar, solid or hollow, where the meaning is structured, at the very place where the Kosmos (the world) comes up which is also where the space appears. Even if inherently antagonistic and dynamic, autonomous and in interaction, its abstruse nature nevertheless pertains to concretion of things and the creation of places. To sum up, the gap contributes to the link between the earth and the sky, technology and symbolism, ethics and aesthetics, what is perceptible and what is comprehensible thanks to which the inhabited space grows. Established term, the inhabited space intends to assert the vital complementarity of the spatial and ontological dimensions of existence. If the gap is hypothetically a paradigm that favours the renewal of the artistic and architectural creation – insofar as architecture is the outbreak of a world – this research is coupled with a praise of the inhabited space, thus giving to the thesis a phenomenological orientation. In the background, the infinite variety of the spatial experiment urges – facing the human being/world alienating relationship – to contemplate one more time the space apprehension from sensibility and corporeality. Bringing together the ideas of Merleau Ponty, Augustin Berque, Gilles Deleuze, incorporating the question of the heideggerian human being or Francois Jullien’s "between" and "interval" concepts, this thesis gets its demonstration in the modern art and contemporary art masterpieces: Paul Klee for the transition from chaos to the cosmos; Kasimir Malevitch and Jacques Perconte for below and beyond the vision; Gina Pane and Ana Mendieta for the relationship with the terrestrial environment, Lois Weinberger and Gilles Clément for a fertile untidiness; Stalker, Guy Debord, the people of Uterpan for the urban drift; Julien Prévieux and Joana Moll for the algorithmic eye; Huang Yong Ping and François Dairaud for modern landscapes; Jonathan Monaghan, Claudia Larcher and Anne-Valérie Gasc for architectural mutations. As many artistic practices apprehended through and for their ability to support the "in-between" paradigm. In other words, to question, survey or rediscover the thickness of life, the volume of things or the depth of reality in order to immediately access the device of the world, its architecture and the gestures through which, to inhabit and create.
